How Do Shag Carpet Rakes Work?

Carpet rakes are like that of a broom or a large pet brush. However, the purpose is specifically to reset the carpet fibers back to its original state as well as remove hairs and other deposits that are stuck in the carpets.

These carpet rakes are either made from tin metal needles or plastic. Most have long handles attached to them, which makes them like that of your usual backyard rake.

People who are familiar with carpet grooming must have seen this tool being used by professional cleaners. It functions by moving the fiber back and forth to make the carpets’ look like when they were first laid out.

Also, carpet rakes can loosen soil deposits during cleaning. This hastens the time it takes to clean the carpets.

What Should I Consider Before Buying a Shag Carpet Rake?

The many carpet rakes available around, choosing one can be a task. So to help you, we have here a simple buyer’s guide. You will have these things to keep in mind before you buy a shag carpet rake:

Size

The first thing you have to consider is the size. And no, this is not the size of the rake you will be buying. Instead, it is the size of your carpets on hand.

Determining the size of your carpet is important since this will dictate to you the kind of rake you will need later on. In all simplicity, if you have a bigger carpet size, then you most definitely will want to consider having a big rake. On the other hand, if your home has relatively few or small sized carpets, then you may want something smaller or handheld.

Weight

You also have to add in weight to this. Sometimes, cleaning or grooming your carpets could feel challenging with a heavy carpet rake. So it helps to consider what you are capable of handling.

Bristle

The next thing to consider is the bristles material of your carpet rake. This could be either metal or plastic or rubber.
Metal bristles are good for those who want to lift out the hair out of their carpet more. You have to be wary with this, however, since it could risk scratching or ruining certain types of upholstery.

For those of you who have delicate carpets, then plastic or rubber bristles for your rakes might be a good choice. These are softer and less harsh. So it won’t damage materials.

Product Reviews

1. Grandi Groom Carpet Rake – Editor’s Choice

Topping our list is the Grandi Groom Carpet Rake. This product works very well that it made us excited to use it again. It lifts pet hair very well while simultaneously loosens and lifts deeply stuck soil particles.

The bristles of the carpet rake are made up of two rows of stiff, plastic tines. They are strong yet not harsh to the carpet. Seeing how it effectively scratched out hairs and dirt with a stroke was really satisfying.

The size is also great. It has an 18-inch head that allows you to cover large areas making the entire cleaning and grooming process faster. The handle is 54 inches long, which allows for a comfortable posture. It does not require us to get down on our knees.

Furthermore, when using the carpet rake, we liked how it really made the original design of the carpet reappear. The fibers were back in place helping it look new and resilient.

However, since it is a rake, you will still have to pick up what it scratched it. It does not hold those.

What We Liked

  • Effectively works
  • Great bristles
  • Great size

What We Didn't Like

  • Cannot pick up hair

The next one on our list is a strong contender for the top. It is the Carlisle 4575100 Carpet Rake. It works as effectively and does a neat job.

It has two rows of nylon tines for its bristles. This removes the stubborn hair on the carpet while restoring the carpet piles. It also helps lift those stains stuck. All of this in a gentle way.

The size of this carpet rake is also as good as the one above. The head is 18 inches long and the handle is 54 inches long. This covers large carpet grounds without the need to bend over a lot.
As you have noticed, it works just as well as the first one.

However, there are some drawbacks of course that made it fall lower.
It does not pick the hair up for you. You can rake them into a pile but you will have to bend down and pick them up.

What We Liked

  • Effectively works
  • Great bristles
  • Great size

What We Didn't Like

  • exclamation-triangle
    Cannot pick up hair

3. Groom Industries Handi Groomer Rake – The Handy Option

The third one on our list comes in a different shape than the rest. While still a carpet rake, the Groom Industries Handi Rake is shaped like a comb. This made it stood out from the rest.

The rake, or should we say comb, has a great size. It is 12 x 2 x 3.5 inches. It can be carried anywhere and be used for other rugs or covers like that of your car. So the usage is not only limited to your carpets.

In relation to that, it is also handy, just as its name suggests. It also means that this product is only good for smaller spaces. You will take some time if you use this for a large room.

It is a good product that scrubs off spots and pet stains while also revitalizing the carpet. You can count that it can make your old carpets look like brand new.
Now for its downside, we find the bristles too flimsy to untangle the fibers. You also can’t use too much force with this.

And since it is comb-like, you will have to bend down when cleaning. This could be tiring for your back. It too cannot pick up the hairs.

What We Liked

  • Works well
  • Handy size
  • Portable to be used for other surface

What We Didn't Like

  • Cannot pick up hair
  • Flimsy bristles
  • Small areas only
  • Tiring for the back

The Roberts 70-127-3 Carpet Rake and Groomer is the slightly younger version of the first two rakes. Its size is a little less but could still deliver despite that.

The handle of the carpet rake is 51 inches long. It can be disassembled, making it great for storage purposes. It also has a 12 inches head. This still allows for a wider coverage as well as a good cleaning posture.

The bristles are made of plastic so it is not as harsh while maintaining to remove the hairs and soil debris stuck deep into the base of the carpet.

On the other hand, this carpet rake is not as durable as the ones above. We feel that the handle is not as stable. So you have to be careful when using pressure.

It also does not pick up the hair or other particles. You will still have to bend down in order to complete the process.

What We Liked

  • Works well
  • Good for storage
  • Good size
  • Good bristles

What We Didn't Like

  • Cannot pick up hair
  • Not durable
  • Unstable handle

Last on our list is the Groom Industries Perky Groomer Carpet Rake. This one does a fair job in keeping your carpets clean and looking new.

The Perky Rake has a 12 inches head. You can use it well for large areas and medium ones. The handle is detachable into three pieces. This makes it good for storage purposes.

The bristles are made up of stiff, plastic or nylon tines. This is good for that less harsh treatment to your carpets while providing the functions that enable the vacuuming of those deep particles easier.

It works well enough to keep your carpets looking fresh and healthy. Yet, it has some criticisms too that pushed it down to our fifth spot.

The bristles, though good in nature, can be easily bent. It is not dense enough to actually penetrate deeper. So you have to pull it a few more times than the usual.

The handle is made of plastic that you can assemble and disassemble. However, it is not as sturdy. And the fit is not as tight so it can come off. You have to be careful with putting too much pressure.

What We Liked

  • Works well
  • Good for storage
  • Good size

What We Didn't Like

  • Bristles are easily bent
  • Not durable
  • Unstable handle
